BSkyB/Sky

Rupert Murdoch launched the Sky satellite service on February 1989 with four channels.

Sky used the existing analogue PAL colour TV system, with low cost receivers made by Amstrad on a hand-shake deal between Rupert Murdoch and (Sir) Alan Sugar. Sky used Astra satellites from SES Astra, rather than UK-licensed bird, to skirt the requirement to use the MAC system which rival BSB was saddled with.

In November 1990 Sky merged with BSB, to form BSkyB which ran as an analogue PAL service until September 2001.

BSkyB's digital service, Sky Digital, had launched in October 1998. It is now known just as Sky.

Rupert Murdoch complained about poor support for Sky from the trade so created his own installation teams to fit the dishes and get receivers working
